Karabits to Succeed Alsop as Bournemouth Symphony Principal Conductor

Kirill Karabits has been appointed principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and will begin his new position in 2008. The 30-year-old Ukranian succeeds Marin Alsop, who finishes her six-year term with the orchestra this season.

Earlier this year, Karabits concluded a two-year stint as principal guest conductor of the Strasbourg Philharmonic. He is also the former associate conductor of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

The son of composer Ivan Karabits, Kirill first led the Bournemouth Symphony in October 2006, performing Beethoven, Liszt and Tchaikovksy to critical and audience acclaim. His recent debuts include MDR Leipzig, Luzerner Sinfonie Orchester, Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur, Luxembourg Philharmonic, and the Bordeaux, Lyon, Granada and Sydney Symphonies. Karabits also debuted with Opéra National du Rhin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin last year. His upcoming debuts include those at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera this summer in Onegin with the London Philharmonic, and with the Geneva Opera in Janacek’s The Adventures of Mr. Broucek (Orchestre de la Suisse Romande).

Karabits is the first Ukrainian conductor to head a British orchestra. He joins a surge of young and dynamic Eastern European conductors rising in the U.K. ranks, including Vladimir Jurowski, Vasily Petrenko and Andris Nelsons, who have each taken top positions with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, respectively.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1893, has worked with many famous composers, conductors and musicians including Elgar, Sibelius, Holst, Stravinsky, Vaughan Williams and Thomas Beecham; and more recently with Michael Tippett, John Tavener and Peter Maxwell Davies. Principal conductors since the founder Sir Dan Godfrey have included Charles Groves, Constantin Silvestri, Andrew Litton and currently, Marin Alsop who will be succeeded by the dynamic Ukrainian Kirill Karabits from the 2008/2009 season.

The BSO has toured worldwide, performing at Carnegie Hall, New York; Concertgebouw, Amsterdam; Musikverein, Vienna; Philharmonie, Berlin; as well as regular UK appearances at Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall, London; Symphony Hall, Birmingham and Bridgwater Hall, Manchester.

The BSO is known worldwide through over 300 recordings, and continues to release numerous CDs a year with NAXOS. Recent critically acclaimed recordings have included CDs of Bernstein, Bartók, Sibelius, Glass, Adams and Elgar, and three discs featuring arrangements of Mussorgsky, Bach and Wagner by Stokowski have been nominated for GRAMMY awards in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Each year the BSO performs over 130 concerts in Poole, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, Weymouth, Exeter, Bristol and Basingstoke, as well as a huge range of education and community projects throughout the region.

Кирило Карабиць призначений головним диригентом Борнмуцького симфонічного оркестру і почне роботу на новій посаді у 2008 році. Тридцятирічний українець змінить Меріна Елсопа, у якого цього сезону закінчується шестирічний контракт з оркестром.

Раніше цього року (йдеться про 2007-й) Карабиць підписав дворічну домовленість як головний запрошений диригент Страсбурзького філармонічного. Раніше він також працював диригентом Будапештського фестивального оркестру та Філармонічного оркестру Радіо-Франс.

Син композитора Івана Карабиця, Кирило вперше став за пульт Борнмуцького симфонічного в жовтні 2006 року, виконав Бетховена, Ліста і Чайковського та отимав схвальні відгуки критики і слухачів.
